YOUTH EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT - Drug and Alcohol Seminar 2009
Manly Life Saving Club Drug and Alcohol Seminar
In November 2009, as part of our youth development program, Manly LSC ran our annual Youth Drug and Alcohol Seminar and for the first time included an “Internet Predator” awareness talk. All members from U14 to U19 were invited and approximately 70 young persons attended.
Speakers at the seminar included clinical nurse Deb Murdoch, and probation and parole officer Ross Murdoch. Both Deb and Ross are nipper parents and members of Manly LSC and provided very poignant stories of their work experiences and the damage caused by drugs and alcohol.
The following topics were covered:
- The dangers of binge drinking;
- Prevalence of drugs in society;
- Dangers of alcohol and drugs to your health;
- Looking after your mates;
- Phoning home if in trouble;
- The repercussions of breaking the law both to yourself and the community; association with an offender may mean you are also charged by police,
- Care when using the internet.
