MEL PELLY'S FAMILY DAY AT STATE MASTERS

26 February 21010 - "Pelly Day" at the Allphones Masters NSW Surf Life Saving Championships
Sydney Northern Beaches clubs dominated the pointscore at the Allphones Masters NSW Surf Life Saving Championship where Manly Surf Life Saving Club member Melinda Pelly spearheaded her club’s charge at this year’s championships.

It was a family affair on Blacksmiths Beach for the Pelly family with Georgina’s five month old son Ashton sporting the club’s colours and happily spending time with grandma Trish while his mum competed. He is already part of the surf life saving movement on Sydney’s northern beaches, attending early morning beach training sessions with his mum and aunty on Manly Beach. The 31 year old’s swag of medals included gold in the Ski, Double Ski, Surf Teams, Board Relay and Taplin Relay, and silver in the Swim and Board events. At last weekend’s Champion Lifesaver event staged in conjunction with the junior state titles, Pelly was named Champion Lifesaver of the Year for the sixth year in a row and last year the talented surf lifesaver won gold in the Masters at the NIB Coolangatta Gold.

As the defending Ironwoman, Pelly went into today’s premiere event as favourite but was knocked off her ski while leading, allowing Redhead’s Michelle Kent to claim the number one spot.

Pelly went head to head in the water with her older sister Georgina from Brookvale. So is there sibling rivalry? Melinda might dominate the water events but on the beach it’s a different story tells her older sister. “I can beat her at the beach sprint.” “That’s why I don’t enter the sprint, because I want to be undefeated,” quickly responded a grinning Melinda.
