Medal Tally ……… 41 Medals
Last weekend Manly competitors were out in force for the Lifesaving Events for the start of the State Championships. Traditionally strong in these events, the competitors did not let themselves or the club down. The events kicked off with the Patrol Competition on Friday. Five times Gold medal winner Mel Pelly lead the new look team with 4 of the 6 competitors venturing for the first time into the Open ranks. With many last minute changes to the original team the positions were filled by Rebecca Keelan, Luke Hanson, Flo Epper and Sarah Keelan our youngest at 16yrs of age, completing the team to join with Mel and Kell Tremayne. They were able to continue the tradition and brought home the gold medal! Congratulations to all six team members.
Saturday saw the First Aid jump into action with Fran Brenchley and Sophie Tyner adding another Gold medal to their tally in the Open event. Kate O’Shea and Oakley Baldwinwinning Gold in the 17s , Henry Tier and Keegan Baldwinpicking up the Silver medal in the 15yrs competition and Greta Leil-Cock and Alexandra Baker gaining fourth position in the 15yrs.
Sunday morning and the Champion Lifesaver event got under way with Mel Pellyon the hunt again for another Gold to add to her collection. Mel won the Gold, bringing her total of Gold medals in this event to 5 consecutive titles at State. Very impressive and no mean feat!
This event has four practical components: Board, Swim, Sprint and a Tube race as well as a theory paper and a resuscitation component. This makes for a very long day and is both physically and mentally a very challenging event.
Toby Wallaceplaced fourth in the Open Men’s in this event with Emma Williams fourth in the 19s Women’s, Henry Tier fourth in the 15yrs Men’s and Keegan Baldwin fifth in the 15yrs age group.
A medal haul of four gold and one silver and a tally of 48 points - not a bad start to the 2009 State Championships!
This weekend the other disciplines joined the winners circle with more medals!
