MANLY CARNIVAL WRAPUP
Many thanks to the army of helpers who turned out from 5am onwards under Allan Tiers guidance to ensure the MLSC carnival is still the premier carnival in the world. With over 3000 competitors over 2 days the event was full of drama with storms halting competition briefly on Saturday and junior competitors being whisked off to hospital on Sunday- thankfully all ok. Behind the scenes we had visits from Graham Ford, President SLSA and the Organising Committee of the State Titles 2013/14 to see how we run events. More on this later!
We now move on to our biggest fund raiser of the year- THE SUN RUN on this Saturday 4 February and THE COLE CLASSIC on Sunday
On Saturday we are looking for 70 volunteers from 5am until 7.30am to assist with the event- handing out water and fruit, securing bags etc. If you can spare a couple of hours please contact the office on 9977 2742
All sections of the club are expected to turn out in big numbers to assist in this huge fund raiser.
On Sunday we expect 4500 swimmers for the Cole Classic and its all hands on deck. The first event will be the 1km swim from Shelly Beach to MLSC at 8am with water safety provided by Glenn Stone’s nippers and nipper parents. I expect around 1200 to 1500 for this leg. The main event so to speak begins at 10.30 with around 15 waves of swimmers going off at 5 minute intervals.
Water Safety
- Mark Epper is coordinating water safety rosters for board, swim and ski competitors
- Daniel Mulcahy is working with Alex Hill and the boat competitors to ensure we have 3 boats in the water at all times
- Greg Booker is working with Duncan to manage the IRB section
For the water safety personnel the “Ian Craig” will be moored on course to supply bottled water and fruit and emergency first aid.
First Aid
Tony Tier will be coordinating first aid with the 2 rostered patrols. If you would like to assist with First Aid please call the office or see Tony Tier.
BUILDING FUNDRAISER UPDATE
I spoke last week with Tony Haven President SLSNSW on our grant application. The story so far- in December SLSNSW at their board meeting submitted to the State Government their recommendation for the allocation of the $2m available for capital projects in NSW. Clubs are able to apply for a maximum of $350k. Marc Manion and I submitted a detailed grant application which was included by SLSNSW. I expect to hear from SLSNSW in 4-5 weeks if we have been successful.
THE CLOCK
Thank you to all members who bring the sorry state of the clock to my attention. According to Council we await a part which has to come from Germany. I would love to say that this will be fixed soon but Council cannot give me a date. Council are working hard to rectify this situation.
Daniel Mulcahy
President
